Bridge the Gap

Bridging the cultural
language gap between
Chinese and Americans
The Visiting Scholars Association (VSA) began in 2001 with the purpose of assisting visiting scholars to reach their dreams and objectives. To that end we have offered three critical areas of assistance. 1) help with arrival needs in the new country. 2) help in finding new friends. 3) connection meetings with local professionals.

We are proud to offer a new specialized service for scholars. VSA staff will be traveling to countries to conduct an English Immersion Camp. This service will be valuable to those interested in improving their conversational English.
Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to help you take your conversational English ability to the next level while building long term international friendships. You will have lots of individual time with native English speakers to work on conversational skills while talking about topics of cultural and personal interest.

Course Details
Each day we will have a short activity to help perfect your pronunciation and grammar. After that, we will have discussion activities that will help build your vocabulary and confidence in oral English.  The discussions will be in small groups of 3 to 5 students to one instructor so that you will have a maximum amount of time to speak. Instructors will speak slowly and clearly using everyday English.  In addition, through the topics we talk about, you will learn about the lives and culture of the people in your small group. Our goal is that you will make great improvements in your oral English ability as well as build lifetime friendships with local and American friends. The instructors will also be available before and after class to talk, practice and further develop friendships.

Here are some of the topics we will talk about:
Career, Personality, Family, Personal Goals, Life Stories
How to get better grades, Dating, Marriage, Success, Hobbies
Food, Housing, Purpose, University Life
Talk to students and profs that have taken the class
It is definitely worth it to attend the Bridge the Gap class. Lecture and materials are  excellent. We have learned not only English, but also part of US culture and skills on  communication.

I think that the Bridge the Gap class is perfect. All the teachers are English native speakers, quite knowledgeable about the American history and culture. They are very patient, friendly and well prepared to teach this program, so it's really happy to  talk with them.  The class has enough teachers, so the students can communicate with teachers on one to one or one to two basis.  Everyone has enough opportunity to talk.
