"Glad to hear from you. How is your family. I am excited to know that you have continued to be a blessing to other generations of visiting scholars. The idea of a web site is quite a good one.
The fellowship was a great blessing to me in many ways while I was in Seattle. These included:

  • -serving as a place for deepening my faith through the teaching and studying of the word of God
  • -It provided me with opportunities to met and relate closely with other believers, who were encouraging to my work of faith
  • -It also provided opportunity for exciting activities

"In all, the Fellowship, more or less, provided me with a family in a foreign land, and offered opportunity to settle down on time and integrate well within the new society.

"I returned straight back to my country, Nigeria, after the Seattle experience. I took a new job as a Senior Lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and as an Honorary Consultant physician in the field of Public Health Medicine in the affiliated Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife in Osun State, Southwest Nigeria. I currently have the privilege of being the Head of Department of Community Health at both the university and the teaching hospital."

"Thanks for the email. I hope you and Charlene are doing well. My wife Kalpana and daughter Shami often remember you and the time you arranged for us. The sky trip that you took us was one of the most memorable time for my daughter. I thank you all for the time and effort you have given for our meaningful stay in US. You created a space for us to make friends, and inflicted a sense of togetherness. Giving time for us, talking to us and giving us the touch of brotherhood and sisterhood was just excellent."

"During my fellowship year, I have received a lot of support and care from Visiting Scholars Association's friends. Gary and Charlene were very helpful in many ways, by helping my family to find apartment to rent, providing me with their truck when we were moving, and inviting me and my friends to nice parties and social events. I remember Becky and Simon visited me couple of times and used to show me a lot emotional support when I was struggling with my broken bones even though they had little baby to take care of.

"Also, I have to mention Dick and Lu Clay, there are so many memories that have to do with our friendship: showing me and my family nice places, sightseeing, taking us for shopping, inviting us to delicious dinners (Lu is a very good cook) etc,. We're close friends. When you are away from your home country, things you are used to, and familiar life style, it's good to know nice people like them who are willing to assist you and befriend with you."

"I was one of the residents who stayed in Seattle dating from the 1st of March in 2005 for 7 months as a visiting scholar at the University of Washington on the grant provided by the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. To be honest, before the departure for Seattle, I used to be much involved in the works associated with arrangements of my own research projects, a result of which did not allow me to think about the issue of new life. I had a little trouble finding my apartment. As for myself, I deeply felt regret that I should have done enough preliminary survey of housing prior to my departure for Seattle. I should have known the Visiting Scholar Association (VSA) in advance and contacted them before I left Japan. Luckily, however, I had the good fortune to meet Gary, who is a president of the VSA, and he introduced the services for visiting scholar. Meeting with Gary enabled me to be invited to dinner for visiting scholar and other activities, and enrich my life in Seattle immeasurably. Thanks to the VSA's tips for life in Seattle, they enable us to create a multicultural citizens' community that supports scholars in their academic endeavors and cultural enrichment. There is also an opportunity to develop new friendships, meet a wide range of people, and feel more at home. On my second visit, when my wife, my graduate student and I visited Seattle in spring this year, Gary extended his warm hospitality to us and accepted us in his house for a few days. I am sure that my friendship with Gary's family shall be lasting for many years to come. My wife has joined me in sending him Shower of Appreciation for whatever he has done for us."
